Advance Chemical Peel aftercare: first 7 days to protect results
By Kitty Sugaring | September 3, 2026
One rule matters most after an Advance Chemical Peel: keep your skin calm and protected from sun and heat for a full week. I’ve had sensitive-skin clients tell me they literally fell asleep during a light peel because it felt so relaxing, then they looked in the mirror and saw skin that looked healthier and more radiant. That result is fragile at first. Here in La Jolla Village, with strong coastal UV bouncing off sidewalks and car windows near Prospect Street and Girard Avenue, your aftercare is what keeps that fresh, clean glow from turning into irritation.
Quick reminder: A little redness and light peeling can be normal. Sharp pain, worsening heat, pus, or swelling is not. If something feels off, reach out to me.
First 24 to 48 hours: keep it gentle, keep it cool
Right after your Advance Chemical Peel, I want you thinking “calm” in every step. Gentle cleansing only. Lukewarm water. Clean hands. Pat, don’t rub.
What I generally recommend doing
- Cleanse gently once or twice daily with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
- Moisturize with a fragrance-free barrier moisturizer. Think comfort, not “active.”
- Stay out of heat: hot showers, steam rooms, saunas, hot yoga, and anything that flushes you.
- Keep hands off. If you touch, you transfer bacteria and irritate the surface.
And here’s what I want you to pause for 48 hours, often longer. Skip retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, scrubs, benzoyl peroxide, strong vitamin C, and any “tingly” product. If you’re used to a big routine, I get it. But the first two days are not the time.
If you’re a beach person coming from Pacific Beach, UCSD, Del Mar, or anywhere in San Diego where you’re outdoors a lot, be extra mindful on day one. Even a casual walk near Girard can add up when your skin is fresh.
Days 3 to 7: peeling happens, but picking is what steals your result
This is the part where people get tempted. Flaking can show up around the mouth, nose, or anywhere you move your face a lot. Keep cleansing gently, moisturize as needed, and let your skin do its thing.
If you only remember one “don’t”: don’t pick or “help” the peeling. That’s how you end up with extra redness, dark marks, or texture you didn’t have before.
For my La Jolla clients who hike or spend time at Torrey Pines, the tricky part is that our coastal sun feels mild, but it’s still intense. A hat and shade are not optional this week. If you have to be outside, keep it short and stay covered.
Also, I keep the “no swimming” rule firm. Ocean, pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, all of it can irritate and increase infection risk while your skin is recovering. Give it at least 7 days, and longer if you still feel raw.
Post-peel sunscreen in La Jolla: when SPF starts, and what kind
Sun protection is the make-or-break piece of chemical peel aftercare. I’ll usually have you avoid direct sun during the whole first week, and use physical barriers like hats and shade anytime you’re outside. Once your skin is re-epithelialized and no longer feeling raw, I like a mineral SPF 30+ because it tends to be gentler during recovery.
Simple routine that protects your peel
- Gentle cleanse (no scrubs, no hot water).
- Fragrance-free moisturizer to keep the barrier comfortable.
- Mineral SPF 30+ when your skin can tolerate it, plus hat and shade.
If you want more context before your appointment, I also recommend reading what to expect from your first Advance Chemical Peel. It helps you plan your week so you’re not scrambling once peeling starts.
Exercise, sweat, and “I’m fine”: the 7-day rule I stick to
I know it’s hard to slow down. A lot of my clients commute outdoors, surf, or train regularly, so this comes up every week. Heavy sweating and heat can trigger extra irritation and prolong redness. That’s why I recommend no heavy exercise for at least 7 days after an Advance Chemical Peel.
Light movement is usually fine if it doesn’t heat your skin up, but if you notice stinging, flushing, or tightness, back off. Your skin is telling you it’s not ready.
Trying to squeeze in a peel around Prospect Street and Girard Avenue errands is common. I’d rather you schedule on a quieter stretch so you can actually recover, especially if you’re hoping to see improvement in texture, hyperpigmentation, or post-acne marks.
If something feels off, reach out to me, fast
Most people do great with a calm routine and a little patience. I also take cleanliness seriously in my studio, and people regularly mention how spotless and comfortable the space feels. That same standard carries into aftercare. If you’re unsure about a product, or you’re tempted to “speed up” the peel, send a message first.

Reach out right away if you notice
- Increasing redness after day 3 instead of calming down
- Blistering, pus, spreading warmth, or swelling
- Pain that feels sharp or keeps you up at night
If you’re comparing treatments for texture and discoloration, I put together Advance Chemical Peel vs microneedling so you can make a clear choice based on downtime and goals. And if you found me while searching “skin care near me” or “skin care clinic near me, ” you’re in the right place. I do results-focused skincare in a calm, clean studio in central La Jolla.
