Back Facial Aftercare: First 72 Hours & Week-Long Care
By Kitty Sugaring | July 9, 2026
Most important rule after a back facial: keep your back cool and clean for 24 to 48 hours. That means no sweaty workouts, no hot showers, no sun, and no swimming while your skin is settling after cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, mask, and hydration.

If you live in La Jolla, staying out of the sun and sweat for a couple days can feel like a big ask. Beach walks, hikes, hot yoga, pool time. It’s basically our local lifestyle. But this short “quiet period” is what protects the smooth, clear result you came in for, especially if your back deals with acne, ingrowns, or irritation from sweat and friction.
First 24 to 48 hours: the rules that prevent flare-ups
Right after your back facial, your pores are freshly cleared and your skin can be a little reactive. We generally recommend treating it like you would after a good deep clean on your face. Simple, gentle, and zero “extra.”
Skip heat + sweat (yes, even if you feel fine)
Avoid heavy exercise and sweaty activities for 24 to 48 hours. If you’re doing an intense workout, give it 48 to 72 hours. Sweat + friction is one of the quickest ways to bring bumps right back.
Shower gently and keep water lukewarm
You can shower the same day. Keep it lukewarm, use a gentle cleanser, then pat dry. No scrubbing cloths, no body brushes, and no “let me really get in there” moment.
No actives or exfoliation for 48 to 72 hours
Hold off on exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA), retinoids, strong acne treatments, and gritty scrubs for at least 48 to 72 hours. If your back tends to get red easily, wait a little longer.
La Jolla tip: plan your back facial around beach days. Coastal sun and saltwater feel great, but they’re not your skin’s best friend in the first couple days.
Days 3 to 7: keep it calm, don’t “pick, ” and watch the sun
Once you’re past the first couple days, your job is maintenance. This is the week where people accidentally undo their results by over-correcting. A little texture or a tiny bump can tempt you to scrub, pick, or throw every acne product you own at it. Don’t.
Keep showers on the gentler side, keep your hands off your back, and try to avoid tight or scratchy clothing. Breathable tops help a lot, especially if you’re out and about in La Jolla Village near Prospect Street and Girard Avenue and you’re in the sun more than you realize.
Sun is the big one. Avoid tanning beds completely, and limit direct sun for 48 to 72 hours. After that, once your skin looks calm, use a broad-spectrum, non-comedogenic SPF if your back will be exposed. This matters across San Diego, including Pacific Beach, Del Mar, and University City, where outdoor time tends to be part of the routine.
Post back facial care: a simple product routine that actually works
You don’t need a complicated shelf to keep your back clear. The goal is to protect the barrier, keep pores from getting congested again, and avoid irritation.
Our go-to checklist (by product type)
- Gentle cleanser: fragrance-free is a safe bet, especially in the first week.
- Soothing moisturizer: look for “non-comedogenic” and keep it light. Apply after showering while skin is slightly damp.
- SPF (when your back is exposed): broad-spectrum, non-comedogenic, and applied once irritation has settled.
- Actives later, not now: if you use exfoliating acids or retinoids, reintroduce them slowly after 48 to 72 hours and only if your skin feels calm.
If you’re also doing back sugaring, this kind of consistent care is what keeps ingrowns from creeping back in between appointments.
Swimming, workouts, and real life: when you can get back to it
People ask us this constantly because life doesn’t pause for skincare. Here’s the straightforward version we give in the studio.
Can I exercise after a back facial?
Light movement is usually fine, but avoid heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours. For intense workouts, wait 48 to 72 hours. If you’re prone to breakouts, the longer end tends to pay off.
Can I shower after a back facial?
Yes. Keep it lukewarm, cleanse gently, and pat dry. Skip hot showers, steam rooms, and saunas for the first couple days.
When can I go swimming or into the ocean?
Give it 48 to 72 hours before pools, hot tubs, and ocean swims. Chlorine, salt, and bacteria can irritate freshly treated skin, especially after extractions.
Normal redness vs “please text us”: when to reach out
A little redness, mild sensitivity, or a few small bumps can happen after deep cleansing and extractions. It usually calms down quickly when you keep your routine gentle and avoid heat and sweat.
Reach out if you notice severe redness, bumps that are spreading fast, pus, or you feel feverish. We’re easy to reach and we take aftercare seriously. A lot of people come to us because they want a place that feels clean, calm, and comfortable, and they want straight answers when they have a question.
“She made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in and took the time to explain the process and proper aftercare.”
