Holistic Kitty European Facial aftercare: 48-hour do's and don'ts

Holistic Kitty European Facial aftercare guide in La Jolla

If you loved that fresh, glowing, softer-skin feeling people talk about after a deep-clean facial, protect it for the next 48 hours. Our #1 rule is simple: keep heat, sweat, and sun off your skin while your pores calm down, especially if we did extractions. In La Jolla, the light breeze can trick you, but the sun still hits hard, even on a quick walk near Prospect Street and Girard Avenue.

Your first 24 to 48 hours: protect those freshly cleaned pores

Right after your Holistic Kitty European Facial, your skin tends to be clean, smooth, and a little more reactive than usual. That's normal. We do deep cleansing and we can do optional extractions, so the goal is to avoid anything that pushes bacteria, heat, or friction into the skin.

48-hour non-negotiables: avoid direct sun, heavy sweating, hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, pools, ocean water, and hot tubs. Keep your hands off your face and don't pick at anything.

Makeup and face-touching

We want you to wait at least 24 hours before makeup, especially heavier foundations and concealers. Freshly extracted pores can clog easily, and makeup brushes and sponges are a sneaky place bacteria hides. If you absolutely need something, keep it light and clean, and skip anything thick or oily.

Heat and sweat (yes, that includes a Torrey Pines hike)

Sweat plus heat can stir up redness and irritation. If you're active, give your skin a day. Surfing, hiking at Torrey Pines, and long beach walks are part of life here, but take 24 to 48 hours off, or keep it truly easy and shaded.

The first week: keep the glow without stirring up dryness

A lot of people tell us their skin stays softer and glowy for about a week after a deep-clean facial. The fastest way to lose that is to go right back to strong actives and aggressive exfoliation.

  • Skip strong acids and retinol for a week. That means AHA/BHA peels, retinoids, and anything that stings. If you're not sure what counts, check your ingredient list for glycolic, lactic, salicylic acid, or retinol/retinal.
  • No scrubs, no cleansing brushes. Your skin just got exfoliated in a controlled way. Don't sand it again at home.
  • Keep showers warm, not hot. Heat can keep redness hanging around longer than it needs to.
  • Don't pick. If you notice a little flake or a tiny bump, treat it like a healing spot, not a project.

And if you're out and about in La Jolla Village, remember that bright sidewalks and ocean reflection are still sun exposure. Mineral SPF is your best friend for the week.

A simple post-facial skincare routine we actually like

After a European facial, simple wins. Think gentle cleanse, light hydration, calm, and protect. That's it. If you try to do ten steps, you usually end up guessing wrong and your skin tells on you.

Your 4-step reset (day and night)

  1. Gentle cleanser: no acids, no gritty texture, no strong fragrance.
  2. Lightweight hydrator: hyaluronic acid is usually fine if your skin tolerates it. Keep it simple.
  3. Calming layer: a basic soothing serum or moisturizer that doesn't sting when you apply it.
  4. Mineral SPF (daytime): broad-spectrum, especially if you're walking to brunch near Prospect Street or browsing Girard Avenue shops after your appointment.

One more note because we use natural ingredients. If you go home and reach for strong essential oils or plant extracts, take it slow. Citrus oils in particular can be irritating and can increase sun sensitivity. Patch-test first, and wait until your skin feels fully settled.

Redness, tiny bumps, and when we want you to text us

A little redness after extractions can be normal. Some people also get tiny bumps that feel like texture, usually from pores clearing out or irritation from heat, sweat, or makeup too soon. Most of the time, keeping your routine gentle and leaving your skin alone calms it down fast.

We recommend waiting at least 24 hours before wearing makeup, especially heavier foundation or concealer. If we did extractions, those freshly cleaned pores can clog easily, and makeup tools can introduce bacteria. If you truly need something, keep it light, apply with clean hands or a freshly washed brush, and remove it gently at night.

Hold off for 48 hours. Pools, ocean water, and hot tubs add heat, bacteria, and chemicals that can irritate freshly treated skin, especially after extractions. If you live an outdoor La Jolla lifestyle, keep those first two days low-key so your skin can settle.

Give it about a week in most cases. Retinol and exfoliating acids (like glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acid) can feel extra strong after deep cleansing and exfoliation. When you restart, go slow. Use a small amount, reduce frequency, and stop if you notice stinging or peeling.

Mild redness can be normal after extractions, and some people notice tiny bumps or texture as pores calm down. Usually, keeping your routine gentle, skipping makeup for 24 hours, and avoiding heat and sweat helps it settle quickly. If you see spreading redness, significant swelling, pus, or anything that lasts beyond 48 to 72 hours, let us know right away.

We generally recommend skipping hard workouts for the first 24 hours, and staying away from heavy sweating, saunas, and steam for 48 hours. Sweat and heat can keep redness around longer and can irritate freshly treated skin. If you do move your body, keep it easy and cool, and cleanse gently afterward.
